How to reject a BIG homecoming date request?

So I heard this guy was gonna ask me to be his homecoming date...I know how to say no, but the thing is is that..here's what guys have been doing. They've been making giant posters with cheesy puns asking you out to homecoming IN FRONT OF EVERYONE, THEIR PEERS AND YOUR FRIENDS. How do I say no to that without hurting his feelings and making us BOTH seem incredibly awkward and make the situation incredibly embarrassing for both of us???!?!?!?

Update:

If he asks me in front of everyone (like in the cafeteria, in front of a lot of people. From past experiences with other people being asked, EVERYONE notices.) how can I say no in that situation?? This guy is really popular with everyone and has a big reputation, and I feel like if it were to happen in front of people I would get judged or something. I know that sounds stupid, but I just don't know.

I would say you're planning on not going. If you ARE going, and he sees you there and asks you why you're there, tell him you changed your mind. He might seem a bit sad, but that's just something you'll have to deal with.
