1.) -8+(-1) = -9
2.) 2x(-3) = -6
3.) -5 x 4 = -20
4.) -3 x (- 8) = 24
5.) -5 x (-7) = 35
6.) 3 x (-9) = -27
NOTE: it is best to avoid the juxtaposition of operators such as x- or x+, or +- without intervening parentheses because confusion can easily result. That is why I inserted parentheses in various places above.
1.) ( 2 x 4) x 8 = 8 x 8 = 64, note ( 2 x 4) x 8 = 2 x (4 x 8) = 2 x 32 = 64 by the associative law of multiplication.
2.) 20 - (4+10) = 20 - 14 = 6. Note also 20 - (4+10) = 20 - 4 - 10 = (20 - 4) - 10 = 16 - 10 = 6.
3.) (3 x 1) x (9-4) = 3 x 5 = 15
