Gods name was important to Jesus, shouldn't his followers use his name?

The Hebrew Tetragrammaton YHWH is only part of God's name and in both Jewish and Christian tradition is almost never written nor spoken aloud. This would include how Jesus used God's holy name. In the past this has been translated in Jehovah and more recently as Yahweh.

Out of great respect for the Name of God, Jews reading the Scriptures will say "Lord" instead of God's name.

In the same spirit of supreme respect, most English translations of the Bible translate God's name as "LORD" (in all caps).

Catholics and most other Christians follow the example of the Jews and the Bible by almost never using the Name of God. This pious practice is out of supreme respect and in obedience to the Commandment not to use God's name in vain.

    Of course! Psalm 83:18

18 May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah,

You alone are the Most High over all the earth

God’s name The divine name, Jehovah, was of utmost importance to Jesus. This beloved Son wanted others to know and use his Father’s name. Jesus’ own name means “Jehovah is Salvation.” On the night before his death, Jesus could say in prayer to Jehovah: “I have made your name known.” (John 17:26)

8 As an adult, Jesus showed humility by giving priority to the doing of Jehovah’s will, not his own. (John 4:34) During his ministry, Jesus Christ used God’s personal name and helped sincere people to gain an accurate knowledge of Jehovah’s attributes and His purpose for mankind. Jesus also lived in harmony with what he taught about Jehovah. In the model prayer, for example, the first point Jesus mentioned was: “Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified.” (Matt. 6:9) Jesus thus instructed his followers to make the sanctification of Jehovah’s name a matter of prime concern. He himself lived that way. Toward the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus could say in prayer to Jehovah: “I have made your name known to them [the apostles] and will make it known.” (John 17:26) Moreover, throughout his ministry Jesus gave Jehovah the credit for what he accomplished on earth.—John 5:19.

@ Den B7 needs to re-think his answer. He called his father 'George' twice in it.

He also used the title "God" another title, same as the title "Father".

Jesus told us the 1st thing of concern in the Lord's Prayer is "Let your name be sanctified" or "Hollow be thy name"

The night before he died, He said he had given His God and Father's name so that they would know he love us.

Joh 17:26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

As Den B7 showed in his answer, there are times when "Father" is appropriate and other times you must use your father's name.

If Jesus hasn't made his Father's name known to you, then you aren't a true Christian.

(PS the titles 'Lord', 'God' and 'Father' are not names)

    (MKJV)

Psalms 8:1 To the Chief Musician, on the harp. A Psalm of David. O Jehovah our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens!

Psalms 23:1 A Psalm of David. Jehovah is my Shepherd; I shall not want.

Of course. It is Jehovah and is found in a lot of historical texts apart from the Bible as well as on some archaeological finds. We all know there are many gods for many different things (not just religion but sport etc) So when a Christian calls on god they should use his name -

My father's name is George, but I never called him George. Jesus did likewise. In the bible, God was asked for his name. God replied. What did he say?

    Jesus never called him that.

The disciples and Paul named the followers of Christ after Jesus Christ.

If God wanted it different, he would have told Jesus.

Jesus called God "Abba," which means something like "Daddy." Are you suggesting that we should be as familiar with God? Actually, that may be a good idea indeed!

God, Father, Lord, etc are all acceptable. He is all these and more. He cares more about whats in our hearts. He knows there is only one of him.
