was it okay to ask for prayers?

My company is inviting a business leader who is catholic and spiritual at the same time to give us a talk.

We were invited to ask questions to this guest speaker female and for us to write them on a sheet of paper.

I asked her to pray for me and my family.

My mom needs 24 hour care and my aunt has come down with a tumor in her kidney.

I take care of mom and have no time for myself.

Was it okay to ask this person to pray for us?

I don't think it was appropriate - they asked for questions - not requests. There's a difference!

And what is the point of praying?

If there's a god, he knows everything, plans every single detail, makes all the right decisions, is perfect, and knows what's best for everyone. Right?

    So isn't praying just unnecessary?

Is he going to change his mind if you pray? No - obviously not, as he's already made a perfect plan.

Is he going to give you what you ask for? Again, no, obviously not, as knows what you should have, and has already planned it out.

Is he going to need you to ask for forgiveness because you're sorry for something? No - if you're sorry, he already knows.

Is he going to need you to say thank you for something? No - if you're grateful, he already knows.

So why do it? I've never understood the logic of it.

    Yes

    Scripture says

Jas 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Yes, since it wasn't a public request.

Prayers are, if anything, counter-productive, though.

That's kind of inappropriate for the setting, and it's not really a question. I hope the doctors are able to help.
