Is keeping my male and female dog together keeping them from breeding?

I have a question about breeding I have two chows and I keep them together in a pin (20 x 20) so they have enough room to run. I want them to breed but her breeding cycle has come and gone several times and they have not bred. I have seen where other breeders keep their male and female apart. Was wondering if there is a reason for this and if keeping them together is causing them to not try and breed when it s time.

Have you taken BOTH of these dogs to the vet for a proper reproductive exam on these dogs?

Dogs get STDs, infections and can have fertility problems, just like any species.

The male needs to have his semen collected and analyzed for semen quality - Things like volume and concentration of semen is important, as well as motility (swimming ability) and the morphology of the cells (semen has normal heads, tails, shape).

In the female, a culture when she comes into heat will help determine if there is an infection or other issues (like PH imbalances). She could also have problems with her ovaries ... etc.

Since the dogs have been together with no results through several heat cycles - it is a pretty good bet that there is a reproductive issue that needs addressing.

When a male and a female dog stay together, more often than not the female becomes more dominant between the two.

Your male dog is probably afraid to mount the female, and you will have to assist the mating.

I don't recommend leaving any dogs together unsupervised. They should be kept separate.

I'd also like to add, dogs should not be left to breed on their own, especially if the ***** has never been bred. She could freak out and cause injury to herself and the male.

Doesn't sound to me as if you have the experience to breed anyway.

The chances that these two dogs suit each other are slim...just because they happen to be chow chows is only the beginning.

I have to wonder whether you have had all genetic screening done on both of them ... Hips / elbows / eyes etc.

They both need a vet check. Have that done first, then when oyu have ruled out STD's and potential problems look for other answers.

You dont know that they havent mated, or that your female has never been pregnant. All you can say is that she hasnt carried any puppies to full term.

I will say or do anything to discourage BYBing.

I will venture to guess you have not had these two dogs tested to see if they are genetically okay to breed to each other. If they are not compatible the disasters will show up in the pups.

Get them both spayed/neutered & forget about breeding them unless they test okay to breed together.

Spay and neuter them. They are not well bred or even pure bred since you bought them from a BYBer., Don't bred your ill bred mutts

You obviously don't know what you are doing. Don't be a stupid back yard breeder. Leave it to the pros.
