Where do we stand, free solar panels, company gone bust?
My grandparents had free solar panels fitted to their roof, they no longer get cheap electricity and the company have gone bust and my grandparents now want to sell their house. Estate agents have tried contacting solar panel company and can't reach anyone. What do we do?

Hi Willow, much as I might disagree with Politically Incorrect, there is a good point there. Even in todays "green" world, most people shopping for homes will not be impressed or even interested in the solar power, and for some buyers, it might be a deal buster for buying the house at all. Many electricians also do not understand the technology, so to make their life simpler, they just tell people things like, "Solar doesn't work." Since the company has gone bankrupt, the materiels on the house are now yours. My suggestion is find a local installer, they are around. You can try combing the web, or simply put an advertisement out that your panels and related equipement are for sale, to the qualified installer that wants to remove them. My installer here does that frequently for defunct wind turbine towers and solar arrays, we live in the States though. You can have the entire business removed and cleaned up and make a few dollars in the process. To get something closer to wholesale or retail for the panels, you would have to remove them yourself. It isn't something your going to be able to do by asking people on open forums for advice. I could remove them, but it's too far away, and I can't tell you how to do it over the internet via emails. You can try surfing over to Homepower.com and see if there are any ads for installers in your area as another option. Good luck, and take care, Rudydoo

Suggest that they contact their state's Attorney General's office, Consumer Affairs Unit. When companies go under, often there are class action suits and other remedies. They won't be alone in this, and sometimes there are public funds available to help, especially where this was consumer fraud against senior citizens. They must make the claim on their own behalf, you cannot do it for them since they are the owners and would have signed the contract.
They might also contact a local consumer reporter. Often they can do a lot of the legwork, in the process of a doing a story. It certainly is a cautionary tale, and confirms my suspicions of what could happen if we take advantage of some of these "free" programs. I don't have any on my roof, and I never will. My sympathies to them- they need to get their local AG to help.

Depends on where your grandparents live in the UK, will depend on the "deal" and conditions of that deal they got.
I have solar however I paid for mine and they are brilliant and no costs in both water heating and electric, so before I purchased I did research these "free" panels, basically the company "rents" the roof for free you get a tiny amount of free energy the company get the grant, they also get the Export and Generation Tariff as well as the income from the Feed-in Tariff and many companies were set up just to harvest that income stream, once that income stream finished they " go bust"...hence why I purchased my own as I get all the tariffs along with a cheque sent every quarter from the electric company paying me from the feed in tariff
Contact these who if they can't help then they will tell you who to contact

Help your grandparents remove the panels and throw them out. Solar panels are ridiculous and will damage the saleability of the house.
