First, in defence of chess it is a great game and I personally enjoy it and spent a lot of money on a good quality board and pieces. However even if you allowed for chess as an answer, it wouldn't be my favourite and out of the "traditional" games, that honour would fall to the far deeper WeiQi (go).
However, assuming that Go is also off the list and you are looking for more modern games, that is a tough call. My most played board game is probably Midnight Party by Ravensburger, partially because that is a game I can play with children or adults and there is depth enough for the adults and simplicity for the children.
In terms of favourite game to play, that might be a bit more difficult. In terms of mainstream games, the honour would fall to Risk but when you open the field up a little, then Starfarers of Catan, Carcassonne or Zombies!!! would probably be the three from which I would choose.
Honourable mentions should also go to Canyon, Settlers of Catan, Ave Caesar and Betrayal at House on the Hill.

My favorite games are as follows:
- Dominion (a deck-building game that won't bankrupt you like Magic: the Gathering)
- Carcassonne (a tile-laying game where you build the "board" as you play)
- Ingenious
- Last Night on Earth: the Zombie Game
- Wits & Wagers (a trivia game that anyone can play and win)
- 7 Wonders
- Love Letter
- Slide 5 (card game)

Of course chess counts - it's a board game,
it's the greatest and most popular board game ever invented.
Like it or not, my favourite board game is chess.

Of course chess counts, so chess is my favorite.
Based on time spent playing the next in line after checkers would be close to a tie between Risk and Monopoly.

I love Pictionary...great even people who do not draw well. Clue is good fun too. As an only child growing up there were many times when I played Monopoly or the Game of Life by myself with imaginary players lol.

Checkers. Though I've never played Chess before or know anything about how it functions, my uncle explained to me that it's a very wise board game that could teach you a life lesson.

Munchkin is always a great favorite for backstabbing your friends, and Balderdash is a lot of fun if you like to have a more open ended game that pushes your imaginative side. Catan is a great strategy game with so many possibilities for play depending on who you are playing with.

Gotta be Monopoly. Who doesn't like being the all powerful leader owning almost all of the land - watching those struggle to even buy Old Kent Road or Whitechapel Road. It feels great. Especially when they get a card telling them to go to Mayfair which I own a hotel on, heheh.
