Should men hit women back if they hit them?

OK when I was 14 I was goofing around with a friend who was 9. He tripped and knocked over when his head hit my hamstring. (ouch) I fell on top of him and as I was getting up I felt a hard kick to my behind/croch. Like between the balls and butt. XD. I turned around naturally and took a swing at who was behind me. It turns out it was a 16 to stud girl. And by stud I mean very athletic (I was a beta at the time). I punched her in the shoulder. Later that evening (This was at church summer camp BTW) everyone was mad at me. Apperanlty the girl had told everyone that I had beat up the 9 to and she tried to defend him and then I punched her. Though there are plenty of witnesses to back up my story I still have people tell me today that I was wrong and that I shouldn't have punched her.

Now based on my story do you think I was in the wrong?
