My betta stopped making bubbles. Is he unhappy?

My betta stopped making bubbles when I moved him from a 2.5 gal bowl to a 5.5 gal tank with a sponge filter (no current). He swims around but mostly just stares at the filter. He has plants to rest on, plenty of places to play in and hide, and the temp is around 78 degrees. He used to make very large bubble nests in the bowl and now he no longer makes them. Does that mean he s unhappy??

No. Bubbles do not mean the fish is happy.

Have you ever seen a male dog on a walk raising his leg to pee on every tree? He's marking his territory to tell every other dog "I'm here!" or "I was here!"

That's what the bubbles mean. He's saying "this is my home!" Poor people can own houses. Are they happy? Possibly not. But they know that they have a home.

    Bubbles do not equal happiness.

Chances are he still thinks of the old tank as home. He'll settle in eventually, probably.

what makes you think bubbles show that hes happy? he made so many bubbles in the bowl because he knew he was going to die so he was trying to mate so he can repopulate(not 100% true)but he was just trying to get some. you dont have to breed him though.
