Why am I running out of breath so quickly at the gym?
I got to the gym 4 times a week for weight training, and I have been going pretty consistently for over a year now. Unfortunately, Im starting to notice something weird happen to me while at the gym. Towards the middle of my workout (sometimes even in the beginning), I begin to lose my breath quickly, I get light headed, and sometimes I get pins and needles/tightness in my head, arms, chest and sometimes legs. Im an extremely healthy person, and I also make sure to eat right before, during, and after the gym. I eat enough carbohydrates/energy foods before the gym, wait the recommended hour and a half (usually), drink plenty of water at the gym, and eat proteins afterwards. I also stopped using my pre-workout which contained a lot of caffeine (I do still drink coffee and occasionally a redbull). My exercise routine cycles between light weight, high reps, and heavy weight, low reps, but the symptoms come roughly the same despite the weight I use. When I do leg exercises the symptoms intensify. At this point, I have no clue as to why this is happening. I was completely fine working out at any intensity before this started happening a couple of weeks ago. The last thing I will do is stop going to the gym, since it is a great stress reliever for me. Can someone help out? Thank you

1) Caffeine before workout is unhealthy. There have been studies done by the Europeans which seems to indicate that loading up on caffeine and then stressing out your heart increases the risk of heart damage. Caffeine interferes with the blood flow to the heart muscles so you are basically suffocating the heart while at the same time place more demand on it. It's bad that you did it, but it's good that you stopped.
The point of exercising is to invigorate you. If you still need coffee or redbull then something is seriously wrong.
2) You need to see a doctor. Pins and needles could be symptoms of several health problem ranging from mild to life threatening. For example, you could have a spinal injury which definitely requires a doctor to treat - such injury do not just go away but will get worse with time.
3) If you want stress relief, do aerobics on an exercycle, elliptical or treadmill. Anaerobic exercises such as weight lifting is not really the best form of stress relief. But get checked out by a doctor first.

First guess is you are not breathing properly during the "push" phase of the exercise. It sounds like you are not getting enough oxygen while working out which would give you all the symptoms you describe. Check your form and be sure you are breathing properly. If that does not do it I would check your pre- post workout blood pressure and pulse and make sure you are recovering (cardiovascular speaking) properly.
