Is it fine to use a 15 year old book as help for writing one yourself?
I bought this book from Writer's Digest. For fairly cheap thankfully. And so far I do enjoy it, the only issue I'm worried about is the author says he is writing it in 2000. I'm worried that the publishing world is quite different now (he references the Notebook as a recent breakout novel) and that I should look for a novel writing help book written in the last 5 years. Maybe 10 but 15 feels like too long. Thoughts?

I would use it, but take the suggestions with a pinch of salt. You're intelligent enough to understand that some things might not work so well these days - otherwise you wouldn't be asking this - so use the same discretion while reading it. All "how to write" books do help to a certain extent, but the rest is down to the individual writer to pick and choose I think.

Use it as a base for information. Keep researching, use the Writers Digest issues to update your info. The publishing world has shifted, but a lot stays the same.
