What is Faith?

There is much talk about "faith" in these columns and, according to Ambrose Bierce in his Devil's Dictionary, faith is:

"Belief without evidence in what is told by one who speaks without knowledge, of things without parallel".

What do contributors here have to say about this definition and its accuracy?

I disagree with that definition of faith. That's actually the definition of credulity ~ not faith.

Here is the Bible's definition of faith: "Faith is the assured expectation of what is hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities that are not seen." - Hebrews 11:1

The word “faith” is translated from the Greek piʹstis, primarily conveying the thought of confidence, trust, firm persuasion. Depending on the context, the Greek word may also be understood to mean “faithfulness” or “fidelity.”—1Th 3:7; Tit 2:10.

The Scriptures tell us: “Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld.” (Heb 11:1) “Assured expectation” translates the Greek word hy·poʹsta·sis. This term is common in ancient papyrus business documents. It conveys the idea of something that underlies visible conditions and guarantees a future possession. In view of this, Moulton and Milligan suggest the rendering: “Faith is the title deed of things hoped for.” (Vocabulary of the Greek Testament, 1963, p. 660) The Greek word eʹleg·khos, rendered “evident demonstration,” conveys the idea of bringing forth evidence that demonstrates something, particularly something contrary to what appears to be the case. Thereby this evidence makes clear what has not been discerned before and so refutes what has only appeared to be the case. “The evident demonstration,” or evidence for conviction, is so positive or powerful that faith is said to be it.

To the believer, faith is taking the words of God seriously and entrusting your life to Him without reservation. It is to truly believe God's promises and follow His commands loyally. In truth, faith is something very few people have. Yes, I suppose it could be defined as belief without empirical evidence, but it is built on some innate knowledge of God that is with every man. No one person is any less responsible for his unbelief than another.

The fact of the matter, faith is the essence of believing, Faith is the noun, and believing is the verb, they are works that we do, and nothing that we do can ever get us saved, because we are dead in trespass and sin, all the work was done before the foundation of the world, as it was written in God word the bible only, No man comes to the father but through the son Jesus Christ, he did all the work before the foundation of the world, that is why he is called the lamb slain before the foundation of the world.

It never ceases to amaze me what morons people are when it comes to their hypocritical comments about the bible which are based on complete ignorance.

Unless any one who comments have read it like any other book from beginning to end they don t know what they are talking about.

I say hypocritical because they expect an accurate knowledge on subject like science and math. I don t see any one misquoting science.

I am of the opinion that on a subconscious level people mock the bible a book they know little about because they want to be deliberately ignorant just in case what the bible has to say might be in conflict to their chosen world view.
