Is the saying "I only watch the Super Bowl for the commericals" proof that Americans are brainwashed by corporations?

Maybe, but I don't think people watch the Super Bowl simply for the ads anymore because the ads in recent years have been pretty lame. It's proof that corporations are pandering to the morons in this country instead of people who are capable of coherent thought and making informed decisions.

If you doubt me just check out the ad campaign that Sonic has run for the last 4-5 years -- the one who two homos in a car. I haven't stopped at Sonic since it began because they're stupid, so Sonic doesn't deserve my business.

No, it shows that Corporate America has turned an event based on sports into an event based on 'entertainment' which features an important half-time show, commercials, music, and, oh by the way, some football.

If it was only the game, think of how many fewer people would watch. It's now an event, where all genders and ages are invited because it's so much more than football.

It's not Americans being brainwashed, it's the American business cycle commanding a worldwide audience. Those guys are smart with their branding.

I don't know about corporate brain washing. Many like the Super Bowl commercials for the entertainment value. Especially when a 30 second ad spot during the game is going to run an excess of $4 million dollars.

No, because the reality is that for years companies ran their best ads, and NEW ads, during the Super Bowl. Seems it went down hill back when they let the fans make ads. Can't remember which corporation did that, but it really seemed to be the end of it. You also have to remember that these weren't ads that were run every day afterwards either.

Nah, because super bowl commercials put an emphasis on funny. It's kind of its own unique thing that way. I think the market drove that more than the corporations did and it became a competitive thing. Part of why they do it is because it costs so damn much to have a superbowl commercial.

No. It's proof that the NFL has been dumbed down into a toss-and-catch game, designed to appeal to casual fans who don't know the game. It's also proof that it's gotten boring and the commercials are more entertaining than actual games.

I don't think so. The Super Bowl commercials are notorious for being funny, even though the may not always be. People like their humor. Plus, many may laugh at the ads but cannot tell you what it was for later.

Just because some people say something doesn't make it a saying.

And since it's a small % of the people that watch the Superbowl that would say that, I think this question proves you are missing a concept of either English comprehension or math.

No. It shows that some people watch a TV show for different reasons. Some like the game. Some just want to be entertained. Ads can be a form of entertainment.
