I personally think it's because people have a tendency to try to cater things to their best interest, so it benefits them more than it does other people. Not all people are like this but I think people have double standards so they can get the best out of all situations; a lot of people have such a superiority complex that everything has to help them as much as possible so something is ok if its putting someone else down but the second it gives them a disadvantage it's bad.
