If you pay money for an ID and an ID is required to vote, why doesn't that violate the 24th amendment to the constitution?

I've been torn on this issue... And it took me until today to figure out why. On the one hand, I think it is important to make sure voter fraud doesn't happen, but on the other hand, you have to pay money for either a state issued ID or a drivers license. Wouldn't the fact that you have to pay money for an ID violate the 24th amendment to the constitution? My solution would be to cease charging money for ID's and making them required to vote everywhere, but I am curious on others thoughts as to whether the argument could be made that paying for an ID violates the 24th amendment if the ID is required to vote.

All the states I've heard will provide a state issued ID for voting purposes for free.

    Exactly

The other odd thing with these laws as they also include other limitations.

For instance, If you have to have a government issued ID, tied to a specific location like a driver's license, why do you also need to register to vote? Shouldn't that be automatic at the bureau, just after you showed them two forms of ID? Why does there need to be another hurdle of registration instead of just showing up at the polls and showing them that ID?

Yes, it is a poll tax if people are required to purchase an ID to vote.

It does, and that is the issue. Those who are for these laws always make the excuse that IDs could be given for free. However, they aren't available for free now.

It is a poll tax. Created for a problem that does not exist. Designed to keep poor, minorities, seniors, and disabled people from voting.

In my state, we vote by mail. That solves all of the problems.
