What are the reasons to believe that the story of the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama s life is real?

He was a prince in a well known royal family in India. There is plenty of evidence he was a real man, and also, he wasn't making any outrageous supernatural claims, he was never meant to have walked on water, although there are many stories like that that were made up long after he died. He said quite clearly that he wasn't a God, and that God if anything is the universe, everything, but he didn't like the word God, because the history of Hinduism had thousands of ridiculous Gods that people saw while drinking soma, a religious drink containing magic mushrooms. I mean, you could argue that those gods do exist, or did exist in somebody's mind, but you know, you don't see things that aren't there if you're not on mushrooms, or a schizophrenic. I think Buddhism makes almost perfect sense, but I'm not a practicing Buddhist, I don't follow the precepts.

None, really. The stories were made up centuries later. However, Siddharta Gautama most likely did exist.

Otherwise, scholars don't doubt that he existed. But other than a general timeline for his birth and death, and few other details, there isn't a lot to go on.
