Am I the only one who saw something odd in the James Stewart film "The Spirit of St. Louis?

Update:

There was a scene in which Mr. Stewart as Charles Lindbergh was talking to one of his sponsors who had just met him at the airport right after he had just landed the Spirit after a 13 1/2 hour long flight, and right after the man asks Lindbergh how the flight was, he pats the plane on one of the cylinder heads and says just fine. The odd thing to which I refer was why would anyone, let alone an experienced pilot like either Lindbergh or Stewart pat a blazing hot engine with his bare hand?
