Rats aren't really like ferrets but they're great pets. They're like little dogs that stay small enough to live in a cage. I used to have ferrets and now I have rats and if I could have 6 million rats I would.

a cat is about the only thing that will even come close to the temperament of a ferret. But vet care will cost more than $100.
If that is your budget, you arent in any position to get a pet. ALL pets cost more than the cost to obtain the animal. They need supplies and/or basic vet care.

Ferrets are obligate carnivores that require 4 hours a day of stimulation and play.
Similar animal is a cat.
Cats are obligate carnivores who require simulation and play but not as often and can be rescued from your local shelter.
You should not want "cheap" pets. They are probably sick.
How will you pay for vet care with a "cheap" mindset? Vaccines and routine care cost a pretty penny

If you want ferrets, adopt some from a shelter. They are cheaper. I adopted mine from a local shelter and they were $55 each.

From my experience with exotics, to include Horses,Ducks,Geese,a whitetail deer,an "amputee box turtle, emu, coyote, even a Black Caiman-worst, and lastly the Domesticated Ferret-12 total. I can speak with absolute certainty my best pet other than my German Shepherd, would be a ferret. Nothing comes close. THE SMELL?-keep their ears cleaned every week! A close 3rd would be a rabbit. Specifically a male(buck)like a lop or rex. Male rabbits if kept indoor, and handled x's times a day will behave almost exactly like a ferret.Including litter, tricks, and feeding habits, $5-$70 for avg cost. I caution it takes a lot of attention to break the barrier of wild instinct but it is possible in some pets. If $ is an issue no pet is right. If you really want a ferret, try petfinder or a rescue. There are a ton of crazy cool ferrets abandoned and waiting for you. The best part is with those you can let the ferret choose you before you buy, and you can get an idea of their respective personality.
