He's leaving for Germany, do I stick around?

My boyfriend of 8 months is leaving in one month to study abroad. He will be in Germany for one whole year and I will be here in the US. I wanted to do long distance, but he did not. So when he leaves we will be over and no longer in a relationship.

He says he still loves me and wants to spend time with me before he leaves. He wants us to continue dating as if he did not make plans to break up with me. I do love him and he makes me happy, but I am also hurt that he doesn't want to try a long distance relationship.

Which would torture me less: spending as much time with him as possible before he leaves for good or saving myself the extra heartache and ending all contact now?

Update:

His reason for ending us is because he doesn't think a LDR would work. He thinks that if you cannot be with the person, physically in person, that it isn't a real relationship. Texting, skyping, ect would just be a diluted version of the relationship. It would be a situation not fair to either of us, in his words.

The last part of the last paragraph.

This should have been mutually agreed upon, based on testing how it works.

The fact that he is willing to do this, is a red flag, (to me) since no one ends anything that is not broken.

Seems as though he needs his freedom, now is a good time, to test the resolve of this one-sided decision.

His reasons for wanting it this way is puzzling, and you do need closure, now, I would not be too comfy with him, but get a good enough explanation -- kind of unfair, if you ask me.
