Will the Republican party survive the Trump phenomenon?

Yes...for a while. But the Republican party has been slowly growing obsolete for years. Trump marks the true "beginning of the end." I don't think the party will complete implode and obliterate itself after the shellacking they're bound to receive in November...but the Trump debacle will certainly leave them badly crippled. And, unless they adapt and evolve with the times (which is something they said they would do after the Romney defeat...but, apparently, never got around to doing), they will slowing fade away into obscurity. It wouldn't be the first time a U.S. political party has died.

I'd hope two (or more!) political parties would rise to fill the void. Having a political system with AT LEAST three political parties would probably spawn a much healthier democracy than what we've got now.

Not likely. I have been republican for the last 5 years. I would have voted republican this election as I have always done if the GOP had gone with any candidate except Trump. Trump is the worst of the worst and an astounding number of republicans are refusing to vote for him; including prominent people like Romney, Cruz, and the Bush's. I doubt the GOP will ever live this down.

Given Hillary's lack of character, he might well win.

    And for good reason.

This has nothing to do with a personality or cult phenomenon.

In 2006, people were openly disgusted with the mainstream system. The media, the "parties" (party, actually), the fakery, the whole damn thing.

Come election time, though, we know our vote outside the parties is a Perot-style airball.

No, the republican party is done. The republican party was done before Trump even came along. The republicans believe in the values of racism, sexism, homophobia, islamaphobia, and xenophobia. The American people no longer stand for the things that the republicans stand for.

I hope the Republican party has permanently changed. The era of the professional self-serving politician has ended, we hope, for republicans. Liberals haven't caught on yet to the democrat party.

  • Considering that right now it looks like the GOP will retain control of the House and the Senate, then yeah, I suspect so, no matter what happens in the presidential election.

  • It will survive because they have the old money. But they will no longer thrive. This will be an embarrassment for generations to come.

Yes, and it will hold the White House, congress and Supreme Court for many years to come.
