Why does Skyrim have such low fps?
Just built my first computer.
I have:
i5-4590 CPU
Sandisk 256Gb SSD
EVGA overclocked GTX 1060 GPU
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
I just installed Skyrim and the recommended graphics settings were "High." It started but maintained FPS~ 3 to 5. This makes no sense, it s lower than the FPS my crummy laptop had.
I reduced the settings to "Medium" and "Low", same thing.
Something simple I m missing?
I saw someone mention a similar problem and they turned vertical sync off in NVIDIA control panel s 3D settings, but I can t find this control panel.
Ah, right, 1 module at 8Gb. And drivers! That was the issue! I did the first part you mentioned in the device manager as soon as I started the computer, checked all that I could but forgot there was an issue with the GPU. After visiting Nvidia's site and downloading a GeForce program that monitors all drivers I'm good :)
It auto chose Ultra settings this time for Skyrim and is running smooth as butter.

I echo Efflandt's suggestion. Make sure all your updates have installed and all restarts have taken place.
Right click on the start icon and click on device manager. Find 'display adapter'. Ensure that your 1060 is there and it's working correctly by double clicking on the 1060. When you click on Driver tab you should see 21.21.13.7270( driver link below 372.70WHQL) If there is a driver issue I suggest a fresh install of http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/... .
You didn't mention your RAM. How much? How many modules?
There have been some issues with FPS drops with the new Pascal cards. https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/4tydge/dp... is just one issue. If you used the disc that came with the 1060 that is the worst idea EVER.
Is a legal Windows 10 build either purchased in DVD form or downloaded from MS?
You mentioned vsync. When Vsync is enabled(access that option inside of a game's settings) your GPU and TV/monitor are supposed to get along better. Let's assume you have a 60HZ monitor. I'm an owner of a 970/4690K/8GB RAM/Win 10 Home/ PC that I built. The 970 is easily capable of reaching 60 frames per second with every game I own, Skyrim is not among them unfortunately. Anyways it can also reach much higher frame rates. That creates an issue. My GPU is spitting out frames faster than my 60Hz TV is capable of processing. This can cause visual issues such as tearing. How is this situation remedied? Enabling Vsync caps my frame rate at 60FPS. Now the TV won't be overworked. I seriously doubt(almost know, okay I know) Vsync would be causing that issue. If you couldn't exceed 60FPS then turning off Vsync would allow your GPU to work as fast as it can.
You said NVIDIA control panel s 3D settings. Are you gaming in 3D? I'd not change Vsync settings in the control panel. I leave that option up to the game. I only have to enable once per game.

Did you let Windows10 run for awhile to do all of its updates? For a new computer that takes a while and can bog down the computer.
