Song Association Wednesday #4: Here's something a bit different?

This time, the challenge is to name your Top 5 favorite bands and associate a song with each of the 5 bands, for whatever reason you'd want to associate it. BUT, the song cannot be by any of the bands in your Top 5. Here's my list, for instance.

1. The Cure

2. Brand New

3. Joy Division

4. Nine Inch Nails

5. Radiohead

And here are the songs:

1. Depeche Mode - "Black Celebration"

2. Sunny Day Real Estate - "Seven"

3. Protomartyr - "Uncle Mother's"

4. Tool - "Ænema"

5. R.E.M. - "Everybody Hurts"

That should clear everything up.

BQ: Is there a song from my list that you enjoy?

BQ2: Ask me a question.

Hey there Ryan! I have to say, this is a truly great question. I know for a fact that I don't have a firm Top 5 bands since there's many bands I love, but I'll give it a go with a rough Top 5.

Radiohead (Song: 'Radio Head' by Talking Heads)

Tool (Song: 'Heavy Metal Drummer' by Wilco)

The Beatles (Song: 'Whatever' by Oasis)

Sigur Ros (Song: 'Um Akkeri/The Anchor Song' by Bjork)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Song: 'Deeper Into Movies' by Yo La Tengo)

Thanks for the awesome question Ryan!

BQ1: Yes, I like SDRE, Tool and R.E.M. Can't say I know the other two though.

BQ2: What are your thoughts on Post-Rock, and what are your favourite bands/albums in the genre?

    Good question. Here's my answer:

    The Velvet Underground

    Wire

    Talking Heads

    Husker Du

    R.E.M.

    Also, here are the songs:

    1. Sonic Youth - "Cotton Crown"

    2. Magazine - "My Tulpa"

    3. Modest Mouse - "Life Like Weeds"

    4. Refused - "The Deadly Rhythm"

    5. The Soft Boys - "I Wanna Destroy You"

BQ: Yep. I like "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M. quite a bit. It's a great song from a classic album.

BQ2: In general, what are your thoughts on neo-psychedelia?

Hey Ryan. Better late than never, I suppose...

Pavement - Folk Implosion - Waltzin With Your Ego.

This may require a bit of explanation. You see, Pavement, though amazing (they're my favorite band) ends up having a bit of an elitist edge. Also, this song incorporates (though in a different light) some of the cool, low-fi quirk of a lot of their great early works. Good companion.

the Beatles - Dr. Dog - My Friend

I chose that one from a band that you will see later on in this list because it was an example of Dr. Dog trying to pull the Abbey Road resolution trick that so many bands have tried to do in a post Abbey Road world and as great as My Friend is and as wonderful of an album as Fate is (probably my favorite of the '00s) it is a great reminder of not only their gigantic sphere of influence even to this day, but also the fact that even 50+ years later nobody can do it quite like the Beatles did.

Radiohead - Grandaddy - So You'll Aim Towards the Sky

A different sort of association. When I first heard Grandaddy, another band that I really like a whole lot, it was during the Napster days and it was this song but listed as a Radiohead song that was a "leaked Amnesiac cut" from before that album came out. Ended up hearing the Sophtware Slump later and finding out who it was and was very pleased to finally know but there was a time where I had this song listed in my library as "Fake Radiohead"

the Shins - Pavement - Give it a Day

So, I took the Shins despite really not enjoying Port of Morrow at all and I use Pavement for association because when I think of the Shins I think of the time when Oh Inverted World came out. I listened to that record in my car for like 6 months straight. I couldn't take it out of the player. I said on multiple occasions that "Pavement ended, but the Shins picked up the torch" or things of that effect. Maybe the Smiths would have made for a better choice as I find myself hearing so much sneaky Morrissey influence weaved through Mercer's singing and lyrics, but Pavement feels apt because of the vibe and during my favorite run of their stuff it just felt to me like someone was taking Pavement to the radio.

Dr. Dog - Wilco - The Late Greats

If I were to dub a band "nostalgia rock" it would be Dr. Dog. They have made their bones on celebrating and repurposing old sounds. As to the "The Late Greats" tie in, not only does this song have a feel that is in line with Dr. Dog, but it also is an anthem to the unheard greats. Bands that may not be celebrated once the wave of time have washed so much away from awareness. I fear Dr. Dog may be a victim of that and thus this song feels apt.

BA: My favorite would probably be Seven. Really good tune.

BA 2 (relating to BA1): Have you do ever listened to Jeremy Enigk's solo stuff? Return of the Frog Queen is a really good record. World Waits has some great stuff too.

    How's it going Ryan?

At the Drive-In ("Scrape" by Unsane)

Kyuss ("Cassie Eats Cockroaches" by Acid Bath)

Melvins ("Hell to Pay" by Converge)

Title Fight ("Yellow Cat Slash Red Cat" by Say Anything)

    Boris ("Silver" by Jesu)

Kinda weird picks for some of these but I picked whatever first came to mind to make it fair.

BQ: Pretty much all of them.

BQ2: What's your least favorite genre of music?

Aloha Ryan! This is going to require some thought (which means it's a good question...Kudo's to you).

    1. Tool

    2. Deftones

    3. Led Zeppelin

    4. Rush

    5. Pink Floyd

    Songs:

    1. Kyuss - "Demon Cleaner"

    2. Palms - "Future Warrior"

    3. Bonham - "Wait For You"

    4. Bob & Doug McKenzie - "Take Off (The Great White North)"

    5. David Gilmour - "Rattle That Lock"

Sorry I kind of cheated with my 5th song, but TECHNICALLY I stayed within your guidelines.

BQ: Most of them, especially "Aenema".

BQ2: What do you think of Colin Kaepernick's refusal to stand for the national anthem before 49ers football games?
