Christians: since Gen 1:14-19 says stars are meant to be signs, why is astrology generally condemned by your religion?

Update:

Gen 1:14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.

Update 2:

16God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

Update 3:

Just so it's known, I'm not advocating astrology. This is just a question I had from when I was a Christian and never got a reasonable answer on.

Update 4:

Luke 21:25, Acts 2:19, Rev. 12:1-3, 15:1, Matthew 24:30. All speak of God presenting signs in the stars & heavens that portend some future event. Wouldn't reading those signs be divination?

Update 5:

I.e. The NT is itself astrology in a form.

Update 6:

So far, no best answer. The OT presents the stars as signs "to mark sacred times, and days, and years", and the NT presents the stars as signs of things that will happen in the future (which is astrology.) I suppose I should say considering your entire canon, not just Genesis, why is astrology suggested and condemned?

Astrology is based on falsehoods and is therefore detestable to the God of truth.. Psalm 31:5

For that reason, the Bible clearly condemns it and urges people to have nothing to do with it.

At Deuteronomy 18:10-12, God clearly states: “There should not be found in you anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer, anyone who consults a spirit medium or a professional foreteller of events or anyone who inquires of the dead.

For everybody doing these things is something detestable to God.

A great truth is simply stated: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” including the planets of our solar system and the fixed stars in their constellations.

In such grand creation, however, it was not God’s will that man make gods out of these things.

He, therefore, strictly forbade his people to worship a form like anything that is in the heavens above. Ex 20:3, 4

Astrology in every form was outlawed.

The Genesis account says the stars "serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years." They also serve to help navigation, although it's a bit weird if you are brought up in the northern hemisphere and then you find yourself in the southern hemisphere!

I think that's about astronomy, not astrology, which is something quite different.

If you want to believe some weirdo playing games with an astrological chart is doing God's work, that's your prerogative. But there is no logic behind astrology, it is totally random. There is no astrology in the Bible, only astronomical references and references to events.

It says that they are "signs" used to mark time, not signs used to predict future events. Remember - they didn't have clocks back then. Dates, times, and seasons were tracked using the stars. But other than that, there is also plenty of evidence showing that astrology is nonsense.

Trying to determine future events by the stars is astrology.

The studying of the stars, planets, and the moons is astronomy.

Astrology is like fortune telling banned by God.

Mediums, astrology, fortune telling all are demonic--God wants us to seek Him and His Son for answers not the dead, the stars, or a crystal ball.

  • Astrology is satanic. Christians should have guidance from the Holy Spirit and not by astrology.
