how to stop my cat from hissing at my dog?

I have this cat for about 1 year now, and I recently adopted a dog. I have been successfully redirect my dog attention from my cat while on a leash. The problem is that even my dog is not chasing or playing with my cat. My cat will hiss when the dog gets close, then he will return with a bark and it escalate from there.

Update:

escalate to more hissing and more barking then the dog bolts toward the cat and the cat tries to run away. Should this happen just for having the dog walking by too close to the cat? when will they start snugging each others like what I have seen on youtube?

What do you mean "escalate from there"? Escalate to WHAT?

You really can't stop the cat from hissing at the dog. It's far easier to train the dog to behave appropriately. That means respecting the cat's space and not barking.

Generally, if you let the cat whack the crap out of the dog a few times, the dog will learn to respect the cat pretty quickly. Unless you have a stupid dog.

So...either you train the dog or the cat trains the dog.

So it's a surprise to you that your cat didn't welcome a dog into it's territority?
