God is fair, and just, period. His love is perfect. His wrath is severe. 1 John 1:9 ; 1 John 4:18 ; Luke 12: 4,5 - Love Him perfectly, as He has loved us, and there will be no reason to fear Him.

god is both a god of wrath against willful sinners and a god of love to those who repent and seek god

Both. God is love and is patient with all, but all those who turn their back on God WILL face His wrath.

Does making a newborn baby suffer for a week with severe illness before killing him purely to punish his parents sound terribly just to you?

God is God.
God is his word and his word is truth and living (Whatever God speaks comes to life and comes to be/pass/exist).
Jesus is God in the flesh.
Sin causes death, thus sin = death for us.
Jesus died taking death on the cross and offering us eternal life (living forever and not having to die once we accept this free gift of living forever.
Jesus died once for ALL sins taking death on the cross for us and now we can choose not to die by accepting this free offer to live forever.
God is love: Jesus was sent to take death so now we all can live forever.
Jesus offers this now and will offer it to those who reject it until they die. Once we accept this gift we do not have to die but some will reject God until death and finally accept this gift when they see Jesus face to face.
God is love and offers us a free way to live forever and will wait for each of us to accept this gift Jesus died for.
Hope this helps.
