The main idea in all R&S activities is that a true devotee should not create any unnecessary friction in HIS smooth relations with God Almighty. Let it remain as it was.
A husband and wife need not daily repeat that I have implicit faith in you and I have unshakable belief in you. It is sufficient if they lead a happy, peaceful and normal life. Let them lead a bright, prosperous and healthy life.

Yea, Religion is pretty corrupt. We have people sending Joel Olstean donations, then they want to complain about not being able to afford healthcare.
I believe that a belief in God can be important to some people. Maybe even help them with their problems. When you have no one to turn to, but God...it could help.
If we were to look at the bigger picture, we can see that Religion IS corrupt. They preach love, acceptance, and equality, yet they practice hatred, opposition, and inequality.
If we were to look at Religion from another perspective, the perspective of the world, we would see that it's a problem. It causes more conflict than peace.
If world peace is what you're after, Religion isn't the key.
Religion doesn't unite us, it divides us. You can figure that out on your own, just by seeing how many denominations each Religion has.
Good Luck!

If you had an informed belief in God no one could use it to control you.

There's no doubt that in the distant past, religion, imposing rules in all areas (dietary etc), was a means of controlling populations. Not so much these days when anything goes - but for me, much as people should be able to protest, there was something to be said for having rules!! Left to their own devices, people will take protesting too far = chaos. Anarchy.
