new setup of pi zero running raspian, what should i be able to hear?

I've a new pi zero, never had any form of pi before, i've setup rasbian through NOOBS. I don't seem to be getting any sound. I can't put an mp3 on to try as my hub won't recognise. I'm connected to my tv via a micro hdmi to hdmi (a new cable which could be at fault?). I could send the zero back for a replacement, but I really want to know if it is faulty before I do that (also I expect I'd have to wait an age for new stock).

Update:

there is no 3.5 port on a pi zero

Update 2:

I've now discovered a few of the games that come with raspian have sound, tetris being one of them

Have you actually configured the pi to output sound through the HDMI cable? If not, run pisetup
