Why is the price of liquor so expensive in Ontario, Canada?
There aren't any taxes on liquor in Canada though... And if Ontario started selling liquor in grocery stores; would the booze prices go down? Or remain the same?
Yeah.. And in Michigan, 30 min drive away, you can get a 40oz of hard liquor for $15 bucks!!! In Ontario, it's roughly $36... The only problem with that is Duty fees... That is what I don't understand...
It's well over twice as much in Canada as in the US... That's it.. I'm moving to the states......
As far as taxes, 'obviously' tax is built in to the stuff...
So a 26er of a regular brand of Vodka is retail $25.75...
You then minus the 20cent deposit = $25.55
Then remove the HST and you are looking at $22.61 for a 26er...
In Michigan a 40oz is $15 bucks.. So, ALL of the responses saying the exact same thing blaming taxes still doesn't make any sense..
Also, the reason why I am even asking this question is because people are standing outside of the LCBO asking me to sign a petition to keep LCBO in ontario as the government is considering selling liquor at grocery stores and convenience stores, just like the states. IF Ontario actually did that, would the price 'actually' go down??

taxes mostly, and the fact that the lcbo sets the prices 'cause it's the only importer of liquor in the province........................... anyone who wants to sell liquor in ontario has to buy it through lcbo

Because the LCBO has a monopoly on liquor sales. Lack of choice means higher prices which means we pay more.

No taxes on alcohol in Canada - man you Canucks are gullible. Free health care ain't free!

Booze is expensive throughout Canada, not just Ontario. Nearly twice as much as any US jurisdiction.

Random samples:
Bacardi Superior Rum (750ml):
LCBO $27.25
SAQ $22.55
Red Wine - Liano Cabernet Sauvignon ((Umberto Cesari) 750ml
LCBO $27.95
SAQ $26.55
Traditionally, Ontario had lower prices on wine, while Quebec had lower prices on beer. Spirits used to be pretty similar. Judging from these two samples I took, looks like you have a valid point. A near $5 difference on hard liquor is nothing to sneeze at.
Update:
They do tax liquor in Ontario. You just don't see it. The HST is included in the price. Same as in Quebec where the SAQ has the GST/PST already included in the price.
