does ‘his mother's and father's room' mean his mother and father have their own/ seperate rooms?

In Fhapter 3: Washing Up of Stuart Little, E. B. White wrote this. It may be just cultural misunderstanding or they really sleep in different rooms. I'm confused.

    If we are talking two rooms , would not }room" be plural ?

    not necessarily, its just a way of describing both their rooms
