Inyone know what the black mush is? What is the gunk?
I plunged a slow draining sink & all this water came up black. It drained out but left a layer of "blackish" mud in sink. Kind of mushy so I wiped it out . My bathroom sink does not get a lot of use but house is very, very old. Hope it's not the lining of the pipes. Thanks

This is just gunk that over time has clogged the sink and resulted in it draining slow. I used to live in an older home and every time we had to plunge the bathtub or sink this black, smelly crap would come up and then the drain would run faster for a while. There are enzyme products that you can buy to put down sinks and let sit over night that gradually breaks down this stuff adhering to the pipes if you use it regularly.

It is mold that grows on hair and can be hazardous. Best to not dig it out but rinse it down the drain

For a bathroom sink, my first suspicion would be shaving residue: a mix of beard hair, and old shaving cream. In my experience, it builds up over time, and it *does* turn black.
Clean it up the best you can. It's not hazardous.
