computer monitor/tv?

I want to use my tv as a monitor. I don't know why this is so hard. It seems like a very common scenario. I want to view and edit photos. Tv and desktop pc are in different rooms. Can't find a wireless mouse/keyboard that works. Have a 50' HDMI cord. Have ipad and apple tv. Any ideas? Thank you.

It's that issue that things are in different rooms, also I'd be a little wary of a 50 foot HDMI lead!

Wireless mice and keyboards often only have a working range of abpout 5 foot, after that interference starts to build up - even if they claim a 30 foot range!

As for getting the image on the TV if your computer will "extend" to a second display you may be able to get it to connect to a Chromecast or even via WiDi if your desktop supports that - though connecting to any Apple device is always a little iffy (eveyone else uses open standards Apple doesn't like to play with other kids).
