    Actually I have never been to a wedding where politics have affected me, or anyone else. Not even sure what that means, lol.

    Every wedding I've even attended has been "nice". I've never been to a wedding or a reception where politics (negative or otherwise) were ever discussed.

    "Effect" is not a verb.

    In the context you wrote, "affect" is the correct word to use. A verb to make your sentence complete.
