What does one do when they can't write a poem anymore?

I am not claiming to be a good poet.

Am average at best, but I have tried

to write and everything comes up

flat.

Perhaps I should walk away from it?

For years, I loved to read and write

poetry. I still want too write, but am

losing my will to pen a poem and

just say 'the hell with it.'

Thank you

Thomas

Toma... there's a sweet blessing realizing being used less doesn't equate with being useless... is such an uplifting thought. Could be that while you love being the poet; it may be time for you to pursue other projects... perhaps this is all happening in perfect timing. Keep the faith that in due season, the words will flow .... be at peace in this! ((I know, I need to have restful, quiet times to be refilled.))

    Well that's a lie! Isn't it mate?

    You are a Poet Tommy!

During times of emotional challenges, we, (you too) write about those feelings.

    Desperate to express?

    As the pen trembles fearfully?

Such be the curse of pride!

    One must overflow tearfully!

Imagine Sir Thomas locked away in his highest tower, recovering from the battle of a broken heart, the arrow of cupid still lodged in his spiritual heart.

Angels dress his wounds as days slip into months, still he endures bedridden visions of his Utopian paradise, still the Angelic singing voices echo.

Soon comes a wandering stranger, bearing a gift of pure water from a blessed relic cup and wearing a holy cross, so the adventure continues in mystical misty medieval musings...

Go outside to talk to any neighbor, watch some good movies you always

wanted to see, call up a friend who uses old poems since they care less

about life,go help a homeless person who needs food,or sit on the toilet

pitying yourself. Finally do as others do since they care less if they are

good or not..Write down anything that is on your mind without over-thinking form.

Saltine crackers watching firecrackers, disturbing the peace,

Beach chairs and soda, enjoyment at the beach,

Memories of Yahoo Poetry which once was grand,

Sir Thomas the poet is still the number one man.

You can do as I learned to do.

Read others poems and enjoy them.

The last idea may be the best, write about anything like I do.

Someone will like it regardless. An example.

Coffee time, run and drink a cup,

    Folgers we can't get enough,

Then run out into the wild blue,

This is what you need to do.

    the endest.

"Well the man who preached the funeral said it really was a simple way to die, He laid down to rest one afternoon and never opened up his eyes...".....(Tom T, Hall) ........sometimes you need more life experiences and to hear different voices and others' stories. Sometimes writing a different person's story from a different viewpoint is the key. Sting talked about it in a TED talk, about how he was going through a similar phase until he went to his hometown of Bristol, England, and started looking into his own family history of boatbuilding, and suddenly "Sea chanteys" came into his head and he started writing about life in the heyday of boatbuilding ocean-going vessels in Bristol fashion. "Lido Shuffle" by Boz Scaggs is a bit sparse in information and yet gets the point across.... "Lido missed the boat that day he left the shack, but that was all he missed, and he ain't coming back. At a tombstone bar in a gin joint car he made the stop just long enough to grab a handle off the top. Next stop, Chi-town, Lido put the money down and let 'er roll. He said, "one more job, oughta get it, one more shot, before we quit it, and one for the road." A little bit of life, can be inspiring. It is summertime! Try enjoying the concerts in the park, summer days at the pool, learning something fun like sailing lessons or a new culture and their stories. One day it will come back to you, a new voice who will inspire your next story.

All I can say is that many great poets have gone through the same thing. Would you be happy if you spent some time writing prose? It seems to me that a poet would be more than able to write good prose.

You might want to try doodling , looking at pretty pictures, staring at blank sheets of paper and writing whatever comes to mind.
