My friend has a two-year-old boy and she focuses on developing his vocabulary and communication, identifying things around him, sharing, and coordination. She has been working on kicking balls, hopping, and playing on the playground. She is waiting for him to show readiness, but when he does, she intends on starting potty-training. She colors with him, paints, plays trains, and reads to him.
She is also teaching him how to help her with chores around the house. He is such a helpful little boy and loves spending time with his mom in the kitchen. He helps sweep the floor and clean up his toys. He passes his mom dirty dishes when she is loading the dishwasher. He will help feed the dog and when he is at his grandma's, he helps her feed the horses and chickens. My friend says some of these chores take ten times longer with him "helping", but she says that he loves to help and she wants to encourage that in him. In addition, this also teaches him about kitchen safety (ex. don't touch a hot stove).
He is also taught to say please, thank you, hello, and goodbye. She also teaches him to respect animals. He is great with his own dog and he absolutely adores my dog. He is also great around my two cats, who can be skittish around loud noises. His parents have a bird that will rest on his shoulder.
His dad and my husband will play trucks outside with him or let him "help" with construction projects (either letting him bring them tools or by letting him hammer nails into a piece of wood).
At that age, they just want to do what you do and be with you.
