Dangers of leaky batteries?

Earlier i found a old walkman in our basement but the batteries that still were inside had leaked and a small amount of liquid seems to have become a sort of solid foam. My mom told me to throw away the walkman cuz it couls be dangerous but I really wanna keep it, would this be dangerous?

Whatever you do, do not touch that battery acid, and if you do, run your hands under hot water for a few minutes. What you can do it remove the batteries and clean off the acid and corrosion on the terminals with baking soda, water, and a q-tip, or if it's really bad, disassemble the walkman and throw the acidic parts in the dishwasher. Once it's done, clean the terminals with that baking soda solution and put it back together. That's how I clean up old remotes and things that had battery acid all over them.
