Should I go swimming?

I have been ill with diarrhoea for 5 days now, and it is much better than it was. I can eat food as normal (i get a little stomachache and wind but it usually settles), and my poo is now mostly brown instead of a yellow colour, but when I do poo it is still runny. Now because of my illness I had to miss staff training at work (as a lifeguard) and have to do a make-up assessment to prove I am still qualified enough. But that requires me to get in the pool and swim. I read online that you're not supposed to go swimming until a full 24 hours after it has gone away, but I am nearly healed and I don't want to put this off for much longer as I don't want it to build up. I can last for 2 hours (that's how long it is) without needing to go but when I need it I do really need it and the poo is still runny. Am I okay to go?

The reason for the 24 hour wait is because by getting in the pool you risk contaminating it and passing it to other people. If you don't feel good, don't do it. Your employer should understand.

If you have been that ill for that long, you are more then likely, dehydrated at this point. Swimming wold not be recommended in this state, running out of energy, cramping up, and drowning are the most likely outcomes.

You may have food poisoning, see a doctor.
