He was NEVER my "hero" and I don't care for any of his movies (his acting was TERRIBLE), and he was a loudmouth, overbearing oaf!

John Wayne was in many war and western movies where he was almost always the good guy. People got hooked on him during World War II; especially after the government used him in public service announcements aimed at supporting the war effort.

His screen persona made him a hero.

A better question: how in the hell did the Bush, Jr. campaign convince the American public that John Kerry was a traitor and a coward when Kerry honorably served in the Vietnam war while Dubya hid in the National Guard?!? Yes, Kerry protested the war AFTER he was out of the Navy. But he served in the jungles while Dubya "served" in Texas. Explain that one to me.
