History is the study of the past from human records. There is a couple of things to remember here. First of, its not just names and dates, although history does entail this. Its primarily question driven, not fact driven. This is the problem with history learned in school. For example, saying America declared it's independence on July 4th, 1776. It is a fact, it is important, it was in the past...but it is not history. Asking, "did the American declaration of independence impact independence movements in other British colonies?", is history.

The second thing to keep in mind, is that history come from the study of human made records. Primarily it is the written word, diaries, letters, government documents, things of that nature. But it can be other things, such as paintings, songs, films, even Twitter posts. Anything that a human made to tell a story. Historians are similar in many ways to archaeologists or anthropologists. But differ in what is studied. For example, archaeologists study human artifacts that dont in of themselves tell a story. Lets say we find a temple, and want to know more about it. The historian will read the writing carved on the wall, or examine the paintings for clues. The archaeologist will examine an old pot to see how it was made, what style it is, or what decorations are on it. They are different methods, but combined there is a better chance of knowing what was going on there.

History is the study of the past as it is described in written documents. Events occuring before written record are considered prehistory. It is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events. Scholars who write about history are called historians.

History can also refer to the academic discipline which uses a narrative to examine & analyse a sequence of past events, and objectively determine them.
