do you think that fat shaming can be used for good?

Let me explain: when a group shames or shun a person appearing overweight, obese , they are telling that they do not tolerate this type of appearance within their social construct. The treatment may be harsh and heartless, however shaming can discourage the person to remain fat and encourage for a change thus perhaps leading toward a healthy lifestyle. If the person changes, then he may gain respect and acceptance and even gain further benefits from it such as sexual attraction.

It seems that conformity is perceived to be too underrated and shaming to be bad. I think also most of people prefer to believe that morality is subjective. However as a society, even the whole world should know that certain actions should be obviously categorized to be wrong such as killing someone for valid reasons or commit pedophilia. We conform to believe that certain actions go against human laws and shaming can help preserve order and counter chaos .

People can be overweight for many reasons. Some people have medical conditions or side effects to necessary medications that make safe weight loss difficult or impossible. Shaming those people would do nothing for them.

Many overweight people are overweight due to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. Shaming these people would only make the root of their problem worse.

For those who don't have a medical condition, or mental health problem, being overweight is often a lifestyle problem. We live in a fast-paced society where few people have the time to cook healthy meals from scratch or exercise with intent. Healthy foods are generally more expensive than junk food too, so many people can't afford to eat healthier than they do. Shaming people for being out of shape because they're working long hours at a desk job, can't afford any groceries other than pasta, or put their family before their appearance, is counterproductive as well.

People are shamed every day for being overweight, and clearly the problem isn't improving. People who are fat shamed often develop eating disorders, or try fad diet after fad diet which just messes with their metabolism and makes them gain more weight over the long term.

If we want people to lose weight, we need to work together as a society to make healthier foods more affordable and junk food more expensive. There are places that subsidize healthier foods and tax things like high fructose corn syrup, flipping the prices upside down and encouraging people to make healthier choices for their budget. This works. We, as a society, need to protect our middle class workers, so they can afford to support themselves on one full-time job, without excessive amounts of overtime. As it stands now, the average working American works 47 hours per week, and that's just the average. More than 40% of working Americans log more than 50 hours per week. That's more working hours than any other developed nation. Add caring for children and keeping up with household chores and most American adults have very little if any free time. Changing this would give our middle class the opportunity to make home-cooked meals again, and the time to exercise if their job is sedentary. We need to design our cities so that they're more friendly for walkers and bike riders. We, as individuals, need to encourage our friends and family to eat better and exercise through positive attitudes and encouragement, not bullying.

Fat people are already shamed on a daily basis and obesity rates keep going up. Even when you were in school, there were always a few fat kids who were teased mercilessly. Did that teasing cause them to lose weight? Of course not - in most cases the kids who were shamed about their weight gained even more weight due to depression

Look, fat people KNOW they are fat. Shaming them does not make them change their habits.

you actually are concerned about someoen being overweight, why don't you invite them, instead, to go walking or swimming or hiking with you, and help them get into a healthy lifestyle?

Not really. It is my experience that very few people are overweight because they just love food so very much. Most people are overweight because of psychological reasons. I can't see how piling on to their problems would be helpful. If you actually are concerned about someoen being overweight, why don't you invite them, instead, to go walking or swimming or hiking with you, and help them get into a healthy lifestyle?

If we stop fat shaming, they'll all eat themselves into heart attacks and the problem will take care of it self. I say we should stop.

No. Shaming usually leads people to become even fatter.

"If the person changes, then he may gain respect and acceptance and even gain further benefits from it such as sexual attraction."

People who were mistreated while they were fat, and then lost weight and became respected/accepted often feel bad because they know people now respect/accept them because of their physical appearance, and if they were still fat those same people who now respect/accept/want to bang them would likely treat them like crap, or ignore them.

It depends. If you're being incredibly cruel to them then no, that won't do any good.

Here in the UK obese people are costing the National Health Service literally £ Billions. There is NOTHING good or 'body positive' about being obese. Was chatting to a girl at the weekend who has lost 84ibs in weight. Just imagine what her life was like before, dragging that 84 pounds around ALL THE TIME, 24/7. It is time to be honest about excess weight. It ain't nice, it makes you ill, it makes your life uncomfortable, and taken to extremes it can give you a very premature death.

Shaming can be an effective method for many forms of social control. There is NOTHING positive about being morbidly obese and if shaming is a way of avoiding that sorry state, so be it. If the obese could justify being hideous, pity-inducing burdens on society they wouldn't take such an issue with being "shamed." They don't like being shamed because deep down they know they deserve it.

Gluttons don't care about anything but eating and sitting. Shame and shun them! Why should we who have restraint in our eating habits have to cover our eyes in fear of having them melt in their sockets because we gaze upon such beasts?
