Why do people like to get on an airplane first?
I've noticed that early boarding is often treated as a privilege by the airline, and people often hurry to be first in line when their zone is called. To me that just lengthens the amount of time you have to sit in the plane, which is especially unappealing on a long flight. If you do this, what is the appeal to you? Is it simply about getting a good overhead baggage spot or something else?

It's a lot of little things. I fly first a lot so i just like to get in and relax. some airlines provide a pre-departure beverage which is nice. But most people need the overhead space. and if you have a window seat, it's just a pain to get there at the end and make everyone get up. also, some people are ***** and will sit in your seat thinking you're not coming and it just adds to the already frustrating experience. i also have elite status so even when i don't fly first, i get on right after them which is nice.

Not sure but I think it a bit stupid when they board by seat numbers they always start at the front. So rows 1-10 are trying to put their things away when they let rows 11-20 on who then have to push past them. Ditto 21-30 or however big the plane is.

Because I want to make sure that there is still space in the overhead bin for my carry-on. Flights are fuller now and space a premium. People will take up 2 spots on the overhead; one for their luggage and one for their jacket and hat.

Because I have a small handicap and take too long to load when the aisle is crowded. And I want to make sure I have a space in the overhead bins. And to make sure I get to keep my aisle seat.

Just a human thing, and if it's one of the cheap airlines where they don't allocate seats, then it makes sense to want to be first and you have more choice of where to sit. So that kind of airline will even charge extra for this.
Other than that, I really don't see the point. You don't get there any quicker. Some people do it because they worry about overhead bin space. But my way is to use carry-on luggage for what it's MEANT for - I only take what I will want or need until I get my checked baggage back, that will be small enough to fit under the seat in front along with my feet, and all I ever use the overhead bin for is my coat. This means everything I want is down on the floor, I can get at it easily, and the only reason I will need to get up and annoy anyone is to answer a call of nature.
On the same topic, why are people in such a rush to get off after landing? If you have baggage to reclaim, you'll just spend longer waiting in baggage reclaim to get it.

Easy to put your stuff in the over head lockers.

I just hate waiting in lines
If I'm not at the front, I sit down and wait until the end...

I do agree that people jump up when their zone is called, but I do believe they just like to be on the plane first, for whatever reason it may be. Those reasons may be having a lot of time to settle in and get comfortable...etc.

You guessed it. It is because there isn't enough overhead baggage space to accommodate everyone, so there is a scramble to get on first. If you don't get overhead baggage space, you have to put it under the seat in front of you, where your feet should be.
With todays Cattle Car spacing of seats, there simply isn't room for both your feet and a carry on bag.
