    Technically, but we humans like to classify things into different categories based on arbitrary characteristics. That's why the whole question of whether Pluto is a planet is so contentious.

    The Earth has sometimes philosophically been described as an island if you are going to take it that far.

    Wikipedia: An island or isle is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water.

    So by definition, I guess it has to be part of a continent. And I think there's also something about it being part of a tectonic plate.
