Is BSc Mathematics of Finance a good degree?

I have to pick a career option very soon and I am leaning mostly towards mechanical engineering but I am also very curious about this particular degree. I am from South Africa and this degree is offered by Wits University and belongs to their school of actuarial science and statistics. If there is anyone who has actually studied this degree and could provide me with any information relating to the job opportunities, the difficulty of the course and the salary of one with such a degree, I would appreciate it. I know that actuaries earn a hell of a lot but unfortunately I just missed the requirements for that degree. I also know that CEOs and people who work in investment banking, financial analysts etc also earn a lot. Thank you to all that answer!

Update:

It's not really about one field helping me in another. The reason that I am considering these particular options is because mathematics and physics were my favourite subjects in school so it is fitting to me that I study something that has to do with these subjects. There is a lot of maths in engineering so that's why I would consider studying it. I would never study something such as medicine which has no maths and only biology based subjects. This is why I'm just curious about finance.

Update 2:

It takes too much of effort to redo matric or to study multiple degrees. It takes a lot of time and a lot of money. I never really considered actuarial science even if I did meet its requirements I probably wouldn't even apply for it. I'm most likely going to do engineering but I was just curious about finance.
