Can the brains of cats decipher music, and can they have musical preferences?

Update:

Please check out this blind cat digging the music. But my question is: would the cat react the same way if the sound coming from the smart phone was an audio clip of young children playing and laughing at a playground?

Cats are, without a doubt, the stupidest animals of all domestics. What people mistake for 'intelligence' is instinct, like an insect that knows how to fly, they aren't sentient enough to even know why or to have thought about it. They're basically like gold fish with fur, responding only to stimulus and physiological need. That's not to say they aren't sweet and cuddly, it is just that no, cat brains cannot decipher...anything...outside of their instinctual range.

My cat prefers The Stray Cats, of course.

She loves doing the Stray cat strut!

Based on observations of cats I've owned, I would say yes to both.

I'm not sure if they can decipher different types of music, but they can certainly hear it. My cat is deftly afraid of my vacuum cleaner.

Of course they can hear music, unless they're deaf. My cats are sensitive to loud noises, it terrifies them. They hide during thunderstorms and when people are shooting off firecrackers in the neighborhood. My cats seem to enjoy my singing, but I'm always in a happy or fun mood when it do it, so maybe that's why they like it.

I think so. I had a cat that loved John Fogerty. No matter where he was in the house, if you put Fogerty on he'd come running and lay by the stereo
