I'm not type 1 but when I first got the news by my doctor that I'm a type 2 diabetic and things have to change, I was a little frustrated at first because obviously diabetes changes your life forever and unfortunately you do have to take more responsibility when it comes to food.

But not I'm not angry at everyone for my health, people nag me about my weight but my weight is not controllable as I have a mild thyroid condition and I'm on antidepressants but I am still not angry with anyone.

The only thing that bothers me is that people think diabetes is all about sugar which it isn't, it's about glucose tolerance and moderating how much you eat.

I understand your rant, and math. Yes, people should be more verbally kind to all diabetics; just like we have gotten past lecturing people to quit smoking or drinking. Nagging does no good. P S -after talking about being kind ... the word is AFFECT. Some habits to correct others die hard - lol.

Keep treating your type 1 diabetes in that manor and you will end up like my brother-in-law. He did the same thing you are doing. He would eat anything he wanted and then just use more insulin to adjust for what he wanted to eat.

He is 52 years old and has been disabled for about 7 years now due to all the complications caused by his type 1 diabetes. He is also facing the final stage of kidney failure and has the choice of either dialysis or death sometime in the next few years. It is very likely that he will not make it to the age of 55. A kidney transplant is not an option for him because of all his other medical issues including his uncontrolled weight issues. His eating habits and excessive use of insulin has created weight problems for him and he is over 400 lbs.

So, yes. You can eat whatever you want and just adjust your insulin. At some point, that will become harder and harder to do and you may find yourself struggling with issues you think can't happen.

This doesn't take into account a person's insulin sensitivity. i.e. for 10 g of carbs I would only need inject half of the dose that you've stipulated, and there are bound to be other type 1 diabetics that are as insulin sensitive as I.

Daniel growing up, the only diabetics I knew personally where all type 1s from childhood, that had problems in their 30s through 60s, with eyesight, nephropathy, peripheral neuropathy and amputations and problems due to over dosing on insulin. I have seen the same issues with type 1s since starting in the medical field, in clinics, nursing homes and home care, mostly with type 1s and now a growing number of type 2s. After you discount the brittle diabetics (both types), and those that also have limited ability to move and those that have no control at all over the diets, you are left with both types that if they don't get a handle on their diets, will have issues later on if all they do is over treat their high blood glucose levels + what they are going to consume on top of what is aready high, with insulin to cover it.

And yeah a lot of diabetics think that way, that it doesn't matter, because all I need to do is take more insulin to cover what I have and what I will eat.

You don't understand what is going on with regards to diet in relationship to insulin and what insulin does in the long term. Insulin is anabolic and not catabolic. Just to give you an example is that mothers who have diabetes and high glucose levels during gestation causes the fetus to grow large and big because the baby produces lots of insulin on its own in order to bring down the glucose to normal something the mother has trouble doing.

In the long run if you eat a lot and simply take more insulin then you will gain weight and when that happens there it makes the insulin ratio worse and more difficult to control and continue to need more and more insulin.

You need to control your diet in order to make your diabetes manageable and easier to control. Eating whenever and whatever you want and simply taking insulin to cover that is bad in the long run.

That's true, but it's still no good to just eat whatever and then give extra insulin.

Insulin itself is a double-edged sword. We need it, but it has harmful secondary effects in the body whether it's endogenous or injected.

The more insulin you have to take, the more your body will suffer some of the long term disease effects of diabetes.
