Assuming you're in the US, it depends on the school you go to: public vs private and in-state vs out-of-state.
In-state public schools are the cheapest. Generally, you need a 4 year bachelor's in accounting to enter the field. If you work for the government, they generally don't require the CPA or higher education. However, if you want to work for public accounting's forensics divisions (pays a lot better than the government), you will eventually need your CPA, but the larger firms normally pay for you to register and study for it.
Also, let me remind you that auditing in and of itself is a form of forensic accounting.
