Lock the stupid dog up in a closet.

Find something really yummy like its favorite treats. Sit in the far corner and throw treats at it. Slowly start throwing the treats closer and closer, until its eating them out of your hand.

If you can pick up the dog safely, that sometimes stops it. Of course a bigger dog wouldn't appreciate this. If there is a dog crate, put the dog inside, and cover it with a sheet or towel or blanket. The dog is afraid. Some of my fosters do this when anyone new comes into the house. Sometimes all you can do is move the dog or just put up with it, because it isn't your home, and you are invading the space. Sorry.

    Quit that job.

You can't change it, most dogs I know are barking at me, and killing them is not a solution. I'm a cat lover, and some cats live with me, and if dogs smell my jeans smelling like cats, I'm the enemy.

You can take on any other babysitting job, but make sure there is not a dog in the house.

Get low to the ground, talk in a high pitched "cute" voice and let the dog approach and smell your hand. Offer a treat and as soon as you can, start gently scratching under their chin and neck*. Side of the neck works too. Start cooing at what a good dog they are. Eventually start scratching all over and give good pets. The dog should realize you're not a threat at this point and stop barking. That said, dogs can be neurotic and may keep barking anyway, but at least they will trust you better.

*scratching/petting under the chin and neck is a sign of submission to the dog and tells them they are in control, scratching/petting the sides says you are equals and scratching/petting the top of the head is a sign of dominance and says you are in control. This one is the most likely to get you bit on a first encounter. When the dog rolls on its back to let you scratch/pet their belly thats a sign they completely trust you.

What breed is this dog? Is it large or or small.

Try being assertive and tell it to lay down and if it does, praise it and give it a treat (if you have one).

Don`t be intimidated by the dog.

If you can`t do anything with it, because you don`t know how or are a bit nervous, then put it in another room and shut the door.

After all its only for a few hours and its not fair for the dogs owners to expect you to put up with the dogs noise or try and pacify it. Jmo.

A little food or some Dog treats .Or maybe it needs to go outside to toilet possibly, or call the owners about it and follow their advice maybe. Eh?

Otherwise the result can be also a very tired baby that cant go to sleep due to its incessant yapping............. Good luck cos your gonna need it with a screaming infant also to contend with.

ADD:::: My apologies also that i didn't have time to complete this answer sooner.

The problem was Lamb related,( a 3 month old lamb was caught in the nets i use to make a Pen at night, for their safe containment. Against wild predators) You see im a Shepherd and currently sitting in a field using a mobile phone.
