Will a mini display port send sound?

Hi,

Just a quick question.

I have an AMD Radeon R9 290 with 2 mini display ports on Windows 7 and a separate sound card.

Connected to the 290 are one 1 monitor one HDMI and 1 on DVI , what I would like to do is to connect a TV via an active HDMI adapter to my TV.

Is it possible to get sound through the display port using that type of connection without connecting to the sound card with another cable please?

    Thanks for the reply but does that work using the mini display port to an adapter when a separate sound card is being used?

    HDMI does send sound over the port.
