in Radeon wattman for an RX 580, why does the fan read 0 rpm, does that mean i have to turn it on somehow?

i went from an old radeon hd 7870 to an rx580 and i dont quite understand how to use wattman yet (trying to) anyway this fan thing just puzzles me and im just hoping that im not damaging the card in someway. Hoping for some information on this from RX580 users. Any kind of response would be appreciated

Newer graphics cards usually don't turn the fans on until the card reaches a certain temperature. If you use something like MSI Afterburner you can set a custom fan profile so the fans come on sooner or are just running all the time.

The fan profiles are by design to have the card run quieter when it's not being used as much or getting as hot.

That's the way these new cards are designed. The demand is for them to be quiet so these cards will run the fans as low as possible.

Also these cards draw very little power while the card is idle, which is also part of the design. At idle the card draws 13w-15w. So the fan really isn't needed to cool the card.

IMO, Wattman bites but you can set a fan profile on there once you figure it out. Usually I use MSI Afterburner to set a fan profile that ramps up as the card runs closer to 50c. I don't mind the noise but other people do. I've seen people write scathing reviews on graphics cards because of the fan noise or coil while. There are just too many sissies building computers these days.
