Saltwater fish tank really worth it?

I have owned fresh water fish tanks pretty much my whole life and now I want something really pretty and a bit more challenging. I went to the local fish store yesterday to price things and find out what I need and the cost is way more then a fresh water tank even if I got everything second hand. Honestly I can afford it, but i am not sure if the hefty price tag is worth it. I am wonder for you guys out there, do you love your salt water tank and was it worth spending all that money on it?

Salt water fish in aquariums are not as hardy, you have to check the PH daily and some species of saltwater fish require live foods. It is a LOT more work than a freshwater, maintenence is time consuming and expensive. They are very beautiful. But remember, it's not just about the cost but the time.

I dont think it is, its so much work and costly. I could afford one too but I went with a big freshwater tank and much happier. Most people only get saltwater tanks because they like what the fish look like and or coral. But there are plenty of awesome looking tropical freshwater fish, I got all types in my 60 gallon aquarium that live past 2 years, fish like albino catfish, rainbow sharks, tetras(they sell interesting colored glow light tetras another fish at pet smart where they have put jellyfish dna in the fish and they are super neon bright colored), I have little fish that swim at the top and medium swimming fish and its literally so much less work and like 1/100 the price.

I always thought saltwater fish needs more maintenance and financial care. Thats why i never gotten one.

I always fresh water fish tank.

If you do get saltwater please do lots of research.

They're pretty cool, they run into some money especially if you go the REEF route, They're pretty, nice talking point if you have people over a lot. There are some freshwater that are just as impressive if not more, like a large natural plant tank, like 100 gallon with several discus, and a variety of other fish like neons, variety of tetras, is as stunning as any saltwater tank.

Most failures in freshwater and saltwater aquariums is caused by people going too quickly and wanting too many, or too large fish for the tank and their skill level.

Don't do that and it's easier.

Note: saltwater will require more expense and research but I believe it's worth the effort.

I would suggest starting small and see how that works out. Thats what i did and I decided that i would just keep it small but keep my big freshwater tank.

I think I would do a discus tank before I did a salt water tank. Or other non everday fish. But I wonder if its worth the trouble to go salt myself quite often.

I have been keeping tropical fish for over 40 yrs now and I had a 6ft marine tank set up at one point with a 4 ft bacterial tanks below it. After 1yr I washed the tank out and put Oscars in there. My friend who has nearly 30 yrs experience asked should she set up a marine tank , I said they are hard work, protein skimmers , mature salt water, and so one as I am sure you have investigated and then there is the cost of the fish which are very expensive here in the UK, but it is one of those things you have to try once. She went ahead and after 6 months said I know what you mean and turned hers into a tropical tank. So is it worth it ? I can't say but if you are an avid fish keeper it is one of those things you have to do. I always used to keep Oscars, then breeding Discus and now I am into large puffers, I run 12 tanks the smallest is 4 ft so I am luck I can select odd ball fish if I want.
