Matt 12;18 states: Behold, my servant whom I have chosen; My beloved in whom my soul is well please: I will put my “spirit” upon him,...?

... And he shall declare judgment to the Gentiles. (American Standard)

The prophet Isaiah prophesied as much at Isaiah 61:1, again the American Standard Bible: (The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;)

Just what is this spirit that is being talked about [Matt 3:16]

The best way to answer your question is to allow the Bible to answer. So we need to know what the 'spirit' belonging to God really is.

For instance look to Acts 2:1-4. In verses 3, 4 The Bible says "And tongues as if of fire became visible to them and were distributed, and one came to rest on each one of them, 4 and they all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak in different languages, just as the spirit enabled them to speak."

Now read on to verse 17 Peter explained from the Bible what happened. " ‘“And in the last days,” God says, “I will pour out some of my spirit on every sort of flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy......"

So God's spirit can be divided and poured into people. Is this the only time where the holy spirit can be placed on different people at the same time? No. Go to Numbers 11:16, 17 where we learn God purposed to take some of his spirit from Moses and give to 70 capable men. Here is the pertinent part. "......I will take away some of the spirit that is on you and place it on them, and they will help you in bearing the burden of the people so that you may not have to bear it alone."

Again holy spirit was divided among many and was there to help people do good things.

And did you not know the spirit from God is equated with life? Look to Ecclesiastes 12 where the Bible gives a poetic description of the dying process. At death look what happens with the spirit. Verse 7 tells us this. "Then the dust returns to the earth, just as it was, and the spirit returns to the true God who gave it." Is this true? Does this compare as the opposite of when the first man came to be? In Genesis 2:7 God formed a body and breathed into the body life and the person came to be. Look what happened when Adam was to die. "19 In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.” Genesis 3:19. Marvelous comparison with Ecc 12:7 is it not.

Many people confuse what the Bible says by trying to make it say what some man has told them. In reality, the spirit given to Jesus is the same as was what is given to all living things. The major difference is the scope of its activity. God uses his spirit to accomplish whatever he wants. He can and has used his spirit to empower men to do more than they normally could do. As examples, the disciples in Acts 2 were given the miraculous ability to speak and understand foreign languages. The 70 men Moses chose were given the power and ability to help take care of the millions of Israelites trekking to the promised land. Jesus was given the miraculous ability to accomplish many diverse things with his life to give honor and praise to God.

That is the answer to your question. But there is much more to learn about the spirit of God. But it is all tied up with life and the purpose God uses spirit for

The "SPIRIT" is Jehovah's Holy Spirit. We pray that we will be blessed with that SPIRIT to help us make the right decisions.

My commentary says: Matthew 3:16 - this was God's official recognition of Jesus as the Messiah.

Putting the spirit on him is what happens in Matthew 3:16. The Holy Ghost GOD sent, gives it to Jesus!

'The Spirit' in the bible is always God's Holy Spirit- His presence, power, wisdom, comfort and love.

Jesus came and was born into a human body but He retained His direct and intimate connection with the Father. His identity as God remained but He set His glory aside to be an example to us of how to walk in the Spirit while He lived on earth. Jesus showed us what our connection with God should and can be. To that end- He promised to send the Holy Spirit to Believers when He went back to Heaven.

When we receive Him as Lord and Savior, His Spirit moves in and we have a direct and intimate connection with Him- just like He did with the Father.

We have no glory to put aside like He did. Instead, He becomes our glory:)
